The Board of Adjustment held a hearing to discuss a variance request for a property located at 22 Bishop Drive. The applicant requested a reduction of the arterial highway setback from the required 100 feet to 50 feet to construct a garage and shop. The discussion covered the site plan design, the hardship claimed due to downzoning, and the applicant's intent to build smaller, separate structures rather than one large building to be more sympathetic to neighboring properties. Board members questioned the necessity of the variance and the potential commercial appearance of the proposed structure, with the applicant clarifying that the building is intended for residential accessory use, such as a garage for vehicles and recreational equipment.
The Commission discussed several land use code text amendments, including the repeal of specific land use policies that are now incorporated into the comprehensive plan. Staff provided an overview of the procedural process for these amendments, highlighting upcoming public hearings and the role of caucus referrals. The discussion also addressed the consistency requirements between the land use code and the comprehensive plan, as well as the status of neighborhood and caucus master plans within the county's regulatory framework.
The board discussed a proclamation honoring Lieutenant Colonel Richard Merritt for his service to the community. Public comment segments addressed concerns regarding short-term rental licensing in residential areas and provided feedback on airport modernization, emphasizing the need for dedicated transportation management. Commissioners shared updates on local wildlife concerns, specifically the bear population, and reported on a successful federal advocacy trip to Washington D.C. Additionally, the meeting covered details regarding an upcoming watershed summit and included the approval of an abatement petition as part of the consent agenda.
